1. EV Cost Reality (Simple Model)
Before buying an EV, this is the only calculation that matters:
Are you actually saving money?
Use this quick framework:
Step 1 — Monthly running
- Daily usage (km): ___
- Monthly km = daily × 30
Step 2 — Cost per km
Petrol:
- Mileage: ~40 km/l (2-wheeler typical) ~13 km/l (4-wheeler typical)
- Petrol price: ₹100/l
→ Cost per km ≈ ₹2.5
EV:
- Efficiency: ~35–45 km per kWh
- Electricity: ₹8/kWh
→ Cost per km ≈ ₹0.20
Step 3 — Monthly cost
- Petrol cost = km × ₹2.5
- EV cost = km × ₹0.20
Step 4 — Savings
- Monthly savings = Petrol − EV
- Yearly savings = × 12
Step 5 — Break-even
- Extra cost of EV ÷ yearly savings = years to recover
Reality check
- Low usage (<20 km/day) → savings are slow
- High usage (>40 km/day) → EV makes strong sense
- Charging access matters more than range
2. Charging Reality in India
Home charging (ideal case)
- Works best for: apartments with parking + socket
- Overnight charging = sufficient for most users
Public charging (current state)
- Still inconsistent, but rapidly expanding
- Useful as backup, not primary strategy
What actually matters
- Do you have reliable home charging?
→ If not, reconsider EV
3. Battery & Range — Simplified
- Bigger battery (kWh) = more range
- Real range is ~70–80% of claimed
- Speed, load, and riding style matter
4. When NOT to buy an EV
- Very low usage
- No charging access
- Buying only for “fuel savings” without calculation
